I know a lot of folks are familiar with Bitly as a service that offers shortened URLs. In fact, that was always my awareness of the service as well. Then I read an article about adding social media CTA's to blog posts and Kickstarters, and I found a whole new way to use Bitly.
If you just used Bitly to shorten your long and complex URL's, you'd have a great tool in your hands. But if you learn to unleash more of it's potential, you can create a really powerful tool for your career and product promotions.
Message. Message. Message.
Have you ever wondered which of your social channels is the most effective for promotions, which one produces the highest conversions, or what message is engaging your fans the best? Bitly can really be an effective tool in finding that out.
Let me provide you with one of my recent uses of Bitly. Recently I launched the Limited Edition Kickstarter for Mark Molchan's Chesley Award nominated print, "The Return". I knew that I would be promoting the launch in a number of different communication channels, and with a lot of different call-to-actions. I knew I would want to track which channels were most effective, and which CTA's had the highest engagement and conversions - so I set up a Bitly strategy for myself. My strategy document looked something like this:
In less than 48 hours, I was quickly able to see which channels were performing well, and which ones were getting lost in the noise. Bitly tracked each code and let me know the number of clicks each link had received, and even what times they were clicked. This was really useful to get a sense of when folks were hitting my channels of communication. I quickly saw that there were peak times when the bulk of my patrons were engaging with my messages, and was able to see how those spikes lead to conversions.
One of my favorite promotional hacks is using Bitly and Share Link Generator together to create personalized CTA's for my social channel promotions. Here's an example for a Twitter CTA:
• Created a graphic with a Twitter call-to-action
• Entered the destination URL (in this case a Kickstarter page) into the Twitter generator on Share Link Generator, along with my default tweet for the CTA.
• Created the link in the generator
• Took the link and created a new Bitly code
• Uploaded my Twitter graphic, assigned it the Bitly Code as a click through link
...and I have a custom graphic with a custom twitter message that I can track through Bitly.
